Hello... may I introduce myself... I am an obsess-er. I always have been... even when I was little. I would get stuck on a certain saying, a certain friend, a certain author, a certain boy. I get onto a bandwagon and I obsess.
My latest obsession is none other than the beautiful Mrs. Rachel Hollis. Author of "Girl, Wash Your Face", and "Girl, Stop Apologizing", and many blog posts. I have found her words to be very true, and very uplifting. I have even started implementing some of her practices into my life.
Here's how it works.
Let me start off by saying that I am not a whole lot like Rachel. She is a very internally driven, goal oriented person, who is ambitious and will not take "no" as a reasonable answer. She is a self described "recovering workaholic", and will easily work 60 hours in one week.
I, however, am driven... but ONLY when someone else is expecting me. I am an externally motivated person. If my sweet husband expects me to do something, or asks me to do something, then I am going to do everything in my power to do it. If I want to get something done, usually, I can talk myself out of it... because there are usually things that are more fun/entertaining/fulfilling/special/etc.
I am ambitious, but I will also concede defeat. If someone says "no" I will eventually accept that. I am not a workaholic. I enjoy my job, but I look forward to my time away from work with my family and friends. I work 30 hours a week and I feel like I work too much...
All this being said, I do understand that there are pitfalls in both of the mind sets listed above. The first time I realized that it was an area where I needed to grow was while I was listening to "Girl, Wash Your Face". Rachel was reading her own book, and in her sassy voice she asked, what if I had a girlfriend who would give me stupid excuses, like, "I just really wanted to watch that show" or "I just couldn't get out of my warm bed" for not hanging out with me. I, personally, have no problem keeping promises to my friends but I struggle with keeping a promise to myself. If I can't show up for myself, then what am I even doing????
So... I started showing up for myself. If I wanted to set a goal for myself, or get something done specifically... then I was going to do it.
Here's how it works...
I started looking up Rachel Hollis and all the things she does. I got hooked on the "Start Today Morning Show"... One morning Rachel and Dave mentioned the "Start Today Journal" and that episode 72 of the Rise Podcast has the instructions of how you can complete this daily journal entry without needing to buy a specific journal. You can just use any ol' notebook.
The first step is thinking of your VERY BEST self in 10 years from now. If everything lined up perfectly, what would your life be like in 10 years!!! Write it down... IN DETAIL.
The second step is narrowing down that 10 year vision into 10 dreams. Be specific with your dreams, and then write them down as if they have already happened. If your dream is to have $1,000,000 in the bank then you don't write, "I am going to have $1,000,000 in the bank" you write, "I HAVE $1,000,000 in the bank". Rachel goes much deeper into this in her podcast and why it is so important.
The third step is to have ONE GOAL. In order to accomplish your dreams and become your best self, you have to start with the first step, and move on from there... ONE STEP AT A TIME! Again, Rachel goes into that much deeper in her podcast. For me, one of my dreams is "I have a clean and tidy home that brings me joy." So, my first step is to commit to cleaning my kitchen every night. This may seem like a completely insignificant thing to some people, but for me, it is HUGE. I am a messy person and I have a messy family. I know how to clean, and it really doesn't take me that long, but taking that first step, getting the motivation to get started, is so difficult. My mom said, not that long ago, that the hardest part about baking when she isn't motivated to do it, is turning on the oven. That means that you are committing to starting.
So, I have been doing my daily "Start Today Journal". My goal has stayed the same every day, and I have accomplished my goal every day. I have also gotten more detailed in my goal as each day has gone along, because I have had to think more about the WHY of my motivation. BUT, each day that I have accomplished my goal of cleaning my kitchen before bed is a goal that I have completed FOR MYSELF! When I wake up in the morning and my kitchen is not a giant disaster it starts my day SO MUCH BETTER.
So, now as my days go along I know that there is an expectation that I will get my kitchen cleaned every night, but it is not something I have to necessarily think about anymore. It is becoming part of my daily routine. So, in 12 days from now, when I start the #last90days challenge I will have a new goal, but I will still be cleaning my kitchen every night, because I now see the value in it.
